Understand
The foundation of every digital project: analysing the environment, understanding user needs, and decrypting existing communication strategies.
My Approach
What is this competency?
In BUT MMI, the "Understand" competency is the foundation of every digital project. Before designing a website or a video, it is essential to analyse the environment, understand user needs, and decrypt existing communication strategies. A beautiful design is useless if it doesn't connect with the right audience!
The Project: Iron Maiden vs SOAD Benchmark
To put this competency into practice, I carried out a detailed comparative benchmark between the websites of two iconic metal bands: Iron Maiden and System of a Down. The objective was to analyse how each band adapts its communication and web ergonomics to its fan community.
Key Analysis Steps
- Ergonomic & Visual Audit
Comparison of the UI and UX of the two sites: navigation, clarity, visual identity. - Communication Strategy
Study of the tone and content prioritisation (shops, tour dates, news). - Persona Creation
Development of realistic user profiles to precisely define the age, digital habits, and expectations of each site's typical visitor.
What I Learned
This analytical work taught me to always put myself in the end user's shoes before starting the creation phase. Understanding the target audience is the key to effective digital communication.
The Project: Statistical Data Analysis (R216 TP2)
As part of the "scientific culture" module, I analysed web traffic data to understand the relationship between the number of visits and the average visit duration. Using covariance, correlation, linear regression and moving averages, the goal was to interpret the data and predict future behaviour — a key part of understanding a digital audience.
Statistical Tools Used
- Correlation & R²
A strong linear link (r ≈ 0.92, R² ≈ 0.84) between visits and average duration. - Linear Regression
Prediction model y = 0.4643x − 1.6699 used to forecast duration. - Moving Averages
5-day rolling averages to smooth daily variations and reveal the trend.
Critical Learning Outcomes
- AC11.01 Present an organization, its activities, and its environment.
- AC11.02 Evaluate an existing website, multimedia product, or interactive device.
- AC11.03 Produce and interpret descriptive statistical analyses.
- AC11.04 Analyze media forms and their semiotics.
- AC11.05 Identify target audiences based on various criteria.
- AC11.06 Conduct user interviews to build personas and user stories.
